Follow that war rug!

Actually our three days combing the Tehran Carpet Bazaar uncovered only one war rug ( a fine Ali Khojeh style runner) which we weren’t allowed to photograph. But the ambience is something else… All roads point to Mashhad.

The quantity of rugs in just this one market makes me wonder if there is for — to paraphrase Ranganathan’s third law of libraries — every rug its user. Who are all of these rugs made for? Is there really a market that can absorb such volume of production? Especially such time- and labor-intensive production. And especially such poorly compensated production (which I’m assuming must be the case, considering how little rugs seem to sell for).
